Modern Doom

I have not played Doom Eternal, but I have played Doom 2016.

It is a masterpiece. A perfect symphony of demon slaying, really big guns, and heavy metal. The sound and visual designs, spot-on. Adversaries old and new, butchered in a dance that plays more like ferocious thrusting rather than old Doom’s circle-strafing. By Judas Priest, there is even a lamp-shaded plot that the player avatar couldn’t give two deep-fried shits about in his silent hunt for more demons to kill and things to break.

So the only remaining question is, can we make

M E D I E V A L  D O O M.

Think about it. Half the time in Doom 2016 you’re beating down monsters with various part of your armored, hulk-like body, or with the butt of a gun, or the chainsaw. Doom Eternal has those wrist-blades. Why not go full crusader, with an arsenal of blades and vague, semi-catholic aesthetics that echo Warhammer?

The lore already has those ghost-knights, and we know they’ve stolen fistfuls of pages from Moorcock, and made Doom-Guy an Eternal Champion, fighting the forces of hell throughout the ages. Instead of Mars, The Eternal Doom-Guy could wakeup within the catacombs of a medieval monastery, and go from there.

This would be the salty caramel sauce to Doom Eternal’s double-fudge sauce, with cold steel and Christian relics as opposed to buckshot and rockets.

I am thinking about For Honor, or Pirates, Vikings, Knights, but with Bethesda’s attention to detail and polish.

You’d need a variety of weapons, of course, and plenty of enemies upon which to use said weapons. No health packs, but Doom Eternal does have those health bonuses. Perhaps holy water could be substituted for a health bonus. With or without a shield? If a shield is used, should it be degrading, like Mount&Blade, or not?

Maces, picks, swords, and axes of course could be used with said shield, but a two-handed sword or polearm could be your heavy weapons; slow to swing, yet easily cleave multiple demon-spawn in half.

Such diverse battlegrounds as a monastery, a besieged castle, the aftermath of a battle-field, a black sabbath/witches temple, or a ruined village.
